To put it simply, male pattern hair loss is caused by the presence of hormone receptors in the hair roots, which are stimulated by the male hormone, dihydrotestosterone (DHT).
This triggers the hair loss process.
The number of locations of the susceptible hairs depends solely on the genetics one inherits from one or both their parents. One starts to lose hair when DHT causes the lifecycle of the hair roots to change.
This simply means that this kind of genetic hair loss happens when the growing phase of the hair becomes progressively shorter, and the resting phases longer until little or no hair grows. Even the new hairs that do grow are thinner and weaker and have an even shorter lifespan.
